Since our founding in 1992, The Country Squire has operated with one singular, sincerely held vision: offer to clients only those antiques that we would put into our own home. Thus, even though we appreciate the fine quality and broad appeal of other types of antiques, we prefer to sell only those antiques that clearly reflect our own individual passions.
As our name reflects, The Country Squire's various lines are tailored to the look of a fine English manor, especially to the library of the home. An extensive collection of 18th and 19th century library furniture, including bookcases, leather covered chairs and trunks, and desks, is accented with period accessories--often bearing an equestrian, hunt, or canine theme.
For the equestrian, we also offer an extensive selection of horse riding and fox hunt related accessories, including crops, crop racks and other antique riding accessories, as well as equine theme items for the well appointed library. A library or other part of the home can be finished off with a selection of our fine 18th and 19th century leather bindings.
A strong interest in the China trade and its influence of English decorative arts has lead The Country Squire also to develop an extensive offering of other antiques associated with Europe's trade with the Orient.
Although often mistaken to be Chinese, the finely decorated tole tea canisters made primarily in England during the Nineteenth Century, clearly reflect the influence of the China trade -- frequently decorated with painted and gilt scenes of Mandarin tea merchants and their associates.
These tole canisters, often manufactured in numbered sets, were originally used in stores to house large inventories of exotic teas from which individual sales were dispensed. The Country Squire offers one of this country's largest and finest collections of antique tole tea canisters.
Another of our specialties is miniature furniture. Of various scales, these pieces often were made as salesman's samples or apprentice pieces. Some, however, were made simply to delight the child in all of us. Although these pieces of miniature furniture were rarely, if ever, made originally for children, we also offer a wide selection of child's seating furniture, including club and library chairs and benches.
We hope that you will enjoy our new website and visit us in person at one of the many antiques shows across the country each year at which The Country Squire presents examples of its entire line of fine antiques.
We can also be found each year at several antique doll shows where we focus solely on our extensive selection of miniature furniture and children's chairs.
You can also see a significant portion of our current inventory at Hiden Galleries at 47 John Street in Stamford, CT, where we currently have six booths. Finally, you are also welcome to visit our warehouse by appointment when in the Boston area.
